SMK Seri Kembangan is a school located in Seri Kembangan, Selangor, Malaysia, on top of a hill in Bukit Serdang. It was built in 1966[1] and officially opened on 19 November 1968 by the late Tunku Abdul Razak. It has 3,600 students and 200 staff.
Name of school[edit | edit source]
Originally, the school was named SMJK (Inggeris) Serdang Bharu. The reason for the name is attributed to the government policy of changing English secondary schools to national schools, with Bahasa Melayu as the medium of language.
History[edit | edit source]
SMK Seri Kembangan was started in 1965 as a lower seconder school with the name SMJK (Inggeris) Serdang Bharu. The construction of the school started in 29 February 1966, hosted by Tun Abdul Razak, the deputy prime minister at the time. While waiting for the construction of the school to complete, students and staff are temporarily shared premises with SJK (C) Serdang Baru and SJK (C) Kwong Hon. The school was officially opened on 19 November 1968 by Tun Abdul Razak, with three school buildings and a canteen.
The name of school was then changed into SMJK (Inggeris) Seri Kembangan, as the name of the village changed from Serdang to Seri Kembangan. After that the education policy requires Malay as the medium of language in schools, the name of school changed into SMK Seri Kembangan.
In 1975, Form 4 classes was started. At the same year, Block D was built with a resource room, two science laboratories, and four classrooms. Science stream was intoduced in 1980.
The school field was built in 1988, and a pavillion was built in front of the field in 1989. Block F was built as an additional school building in 1991.
In 1992, four classrooms, a volleyball court, a basketball court, and a parking space for bicycles was built.
Block G was built in 2002 as an additional school building, and the construction of a school hall was started at the same year. The school hall was completed in 2003, which cost RM230,000 and took six months to complete. Block H was built in 2004 as the number of students is increasing.
