Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan (Tamil) Lorong Java (Tamil: லோரோங் ஜாவா தமிழ்ப்பள்ளி) is a Tamil primary school located in Seremban, Negeri Sembilan. It is the oldest Tamil school in Malaysia.
History[edit | edit source]
The school initially started in 1897 in Lemon Street (now Jalan Tuanku Munawir). Due to the increasing number of students, the school was relocated to Java Lane (Malay: Lorong Java) in 1909. The school turned into a fully-aided school and Tamil language was used as the medium of instruction.
The school was closed in 11 September 1957 as the school building was not suitable due to safety and health reasons. The students were then sent to Vivekananda Tamil School in Bukit Tembok that was operated by Ceylonese Club. The Indian community opposed the plan to combine Lorong Java and Vivekananda Tamil schools. "Seremban Tamil School Establishing Committee" was established and their aim was to reestablish Lorong Java Tamil School. After some setbacks, the school was finally reestablished in 1960.
